A Pap smear is a quick, simple and readily available test for early signs of cervical cancer.
The test is performed by using a small brush to collect surface cells from the cervix. This is then placed into a collection bottle and sent to the lab for review. The whole process is very quick and pain-free.
A normal Pap smear result technically means you shouldn’t need to screen again for 3 years but our advice is to do it once yearly for peace of mind.
At the same time, women can be screened for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is the number 1 cause of cervical cancer.
Getting vaccinated against HPV might also be a good thing to do at this point to reduce your lifetime risk.`
From 8th May we will be able to perform free pap smears for Singaporean and PR ladies between the ages of 25 and 69, tied in with the Singapore Cancer Society. This screening package is available until 31st August 2017.
